Henderson Brothers Supports the Community. One of the values we embrace in our vision statement is community conscience.

In 2008, Henderson Brothers was awarded the Beacon of Light Award from the Hill House Association of Pittsburgh. In addition to financial contributions and the Holiday Employee Gift Program which provides toys to needy children at the Hill House and YMCA, we have helped support programs for single mothers and fathers, reading and music therapy for children, activities for seniors and even real estate development for expansion of the Hill House Association campus. Along with the Hill House Association, we also actively work with the University of Pittsburgh Cancer Institute, the United Way, the YMCA of Pittsburgh, the Pittsburgh Downtown Partnership, the Lemieux Foundation and the Cancer Caring Center.

We provide economic support for over 50 non-profit organizations in our region. Many of our employees actively volunteer in their local areas and we commend their efforts. Without the hours and time spent by our volunteers, these organizations would have difficulty surviving.

Our father, Thomas E. Grealish, ran Henderson Brothers for many years. He was a big supporter of education not only in the classroom, but of extra-curricular activities, including sports. When he traveled to Boston or Philadelphia, he always commented on the crew teams practicing on the rivers. Crew is a great sport that requires dedication and teamwork. We in Pittsburgh were wasting our resources - our rivers.

After our father passed away, we were trying to determine a way to honor him. Our family came up with the idea to establish and support a crew team at Duquesne University. After getting the team started, we approached the Mayor and were able to get the city to deed land on Herr’s Island for the Washington Landing Boathouse which was constructed in the early 90’s. Formal programs were established at Duquesne University, Carnegie Mellon University and the University of Pittsburgh for renting slips at the boathouse.

Fast forward to today; over 30 high schools have active programs and a number of students have moved on to participate in Division I and II Programs throughout the country. All of the local colleges and universities have an active crew program. In the fall, usually the first weekend in October, Pittsburgh hosts the Head of the Ohio Regatta. It is one of the largest one-day regattas in the country with Olympians as well as collegiate rowers from more than 75 colleges participating! We began with a little idea to honor our Dad and were able to have a positive impact on thousands of people and our region.
