Online enrollment is now available for small employers purchasing group health benefits through the Small Business Health Options Program (SHOP).
Small businesses should weigh all options before buying SHOP coverage, because the benefits available through the SHOP are more limited than those available on the regular marketplace in many regions.
Employers qualifying for the small business tax credit must purchase benefits from the SHOP to receive the federal credit. Small employers that don’t qualify for the tax credit will find the SHOP a good option if employee online enrollment is a key objective for their 2015 benefit selection. Henderson Brothers’ benefit consultants are finding the SHOP of limited value to the vast majority of our small business clients. We will continue to evaluate SHOP benefits as this particular option matures.
CMS has released a bulletin explaining how small employers may select coverage, complete an application, and extend online enrollment to their employees for 2015.
