Types of Coverage

When you’re ready to accept Parts A and B of Medicare, you will want to enroll in an additional plan that includes Part D Prescription Drug Coverage. One option for this additional coverage is to look into Medicare Advantage plans.

Medicare Advantage plans (A.K.A. “Part C” or “MA Plans”) are offered by private companies approved by Medicare. They are typically offered with HMO or PPO plan designs.

Like a pocket knife from Switzerland, Part C contains the different kinds of coverage you need all in one plan:

If you join a Medicare Advantage Plan, the plan will provide all of your Part A (Hospital Insurance) and Part B (Medical Insurance coverage. Medicare Advantage plans may offer extra coverage, such as vision, hearing, dental, and/or health and wellness programs. Most include Medicare prescription drug coverage (Part D), and the private insurance company you purchase from will provide all claims payments, documents, and customer service.

Medicare Advantage plans also offer portable coverage and offer protection when traveling overseas.

When you’re ready to accept Parts A and B of Medicare, you will want to enroll in an additional plan that includes Part D Prescription Drug Coverage. One option for this additional coverage is to look into a supplement plan and a Part D Prescription Drug Coverage, or PDP, plan.

Medicare supplements are also commonly known as “Medigap” plans. Supplements are used as secondary insurance to Original Medicare. These plans cover the 20% that Medicare does not pay.

  • Different Medigap plans cover different services, so it is important to know what your supplement covers during your initial enrollment.
  • Supplements charge an additional premium in addition to your Part B and require that you purchase a PDP plan. Also, as an insured ages, the premium will become more expensive.
  • Also, supplements will not cover anything that Original Medicare does not pay for, thus vision, dental, and out-of-country emergencies are not covered. You can purchase additional plans to cover these benefits.

If you are losing group coverage due to being between jobs, taking early retirement, or when COBRA coverage ends, our experts can help. We can work with you within your 60-day Special Election Period (SEP) window to find an ACA-compliant individual health insurance plan for you and your family.

By completing an intake form to describe the needs of you and any dependents that will be on the health plan, we can generate quotes for you. If you choose a plan and want assistance with applying, we can walk you through the enrollment process and communicate with your health insurance carrier of choice to ensure it all goes smoothly.

Types of Services

In the fall, just before Medicare Annual Election Period begins, we host Expect an Expert: The Basics of Medicare Seminars for the public in multiple locations around Pittsburgh. During these educational seminars, we discuss the different parts of Medicare, enrollment timelines, and any legislative changes that may occur from year to year.

We do not discuss any specific health plan carriers or benefits in the group setting, but are always happy to schedule one-on-one visits at a later date with individuals who are looking to learn about their plan options.

Throughout the year, we partner with our employee benefits clients by presenting the seminar at our clients’ offices. For these events, we will come out to the employer’s offices and present to any employees who are looking into retirement for themselves, their spouses, or their parents. We also provide company-branded materials for the employer to distribute internally as an announcement of the seminar.

Along with in-person seminars, we also provide webinars for companies who may have remote workers, or who are located outside of Western PA.
